If there is a push to ban cell phone use while driving...?
Find answers to your legal question.

If there is a push to ban cell phone use while driving...?

Where is the push to ban other communication devices from cars and trucks as well?

Isn't using the phone feature that On-star the same thing?

What about dispatch radios, CB radios, portable radios?

What is more distracting? Dialing a phone, texting on your blackberry, or punching informatio into your GPS device while driving?

I even saw one guy the other day with a LAPTOP! I had to slow down and do a double take, but sure enough, he had his laptop open and against the steering wheel.

If we are going after phones, why dont we pass laws on all this other crap which is probably even more dangerous?

Did you steal your points from my blog?

You're preaching to the choir young man.

Like others have said, there is a push to go for hands-free cell phones, although I don't know if that's much of an improvement because many studies have shown that it is just as much of a distraction.

I use my cell all the time while driving for business. While not "hands free" I do use some common sense on when to use it. If I am traveling down a highway I feel I can do it responsibly (I drive with one hand on the wheel most of the time anyway.) But I avoid using it in heavy traffic.

My wife recently pointed out that dialing may be the biggest distraction of all in relation to the phone, as you are generally looking at the display. I think those voice recognition phones would help that.

All that being said, I am against adding more laws on the books targeting cell phones. If you a distracted driver and are driving recklessly, you should be cited, plain and simple, phone, laptop, or otherwise.

In most countries there are bans or restrictions on using mobile phones that are not hands free.

As far as the laptop user is concerned , there unfortunately is no laws against being stoopid !

All of these things you describe are sources for distractions.

You can pass all the laws you want to, but you are never going to eliminate them or the breadth of people's stupidity.

For the reasons you stated and more, no, not really. some communities have tried banning cell phone use while driving but it is pretty much unenforcable. cell phones have not been proven to cause any more accidents than other "distracted driving" such as putting on makeup, eating, changing your clothes., reaching around to slap the kids, or making out with your girlfreind.

Yes I am here!!
they are trying to ban it everywhere.

I think the push is more towards banning handheld phones.

what their basically wanting to do right now is get rid of all the phones that aren't hands free, why their doing this is because of all the accidents caused by using cell phones, they don't care about the phones, its the drivers that are reckless when talking on them,i think if it was a law that all of them had to be hands free, that would solve all of this, that's what they are concerned about right now, people trying to hold a phone with one hand and drive with another, everyone will still always have the cell phones, they,ll just figure out a better way to make them safer to use, like what you have seen,i have seen women putting on make up in the morning while driving, and also seen men shaving while driving, you see all kinds of stuff these days,i once seen a woman changing tops while driving.needless to say she drew a lot of attention that morning, good luck ,hope this helps.

I'm sure that at some point those other items will come into question. Cell phones are the first target because they are much more prevalent than GPS systems or laptops.

CB's are used primarily by the trucking industry and are necessary for communication between the trucks and the home dispatch. On-star is probably not used constantly by people driving, as cell phones are, and it is more of a safety and security device than a phone.

The easiest thing would be to require everybody to have to use a hands free headset in their vehicles and of course absolutely no texting and driving.

speaking of laptops, I see police officers using their on-board laptops while driving, radios, and phones also. Should they not be held to the same safety standards?

In many countries it is illegal to eat or drink , smoke , and most anything else that could distract a driver . While it could stop some abuses , many will disregard such a law . The law would also cause an extreme invasion of privacy problem , since you could then be stopped at will by police or hiway patrol . They could claim anything as probable cause and that would be far too intrusive . Less laws would be better .
