If you could change the speed limits for UK Roads?
|
we know the current speed limit for a built up area is normally 30, and the national speed limit 4 single carriageway is 60 and 70 for motorways, would you change any of them if u had the law in your hands and if so what to and why?

They seem fine to me. If I could change any single aspect of driving I would make it compulsory for teenagers to own a 1000cc (in a similar scheme to that used for motorcycle riders) or less until they have three years experience. This might alleviate the problem of cretinous "boy-racers". |

Increase motorway to 90
Have more 20 zones around schools and residential areas, but keep the general 30 for built up areas.
upgrade suitable dual carriage ways (i.e. those without lights, right turns, gaps in the reservation) to motorways. |

Have you seen a crash recently ?
people are incapble of driving safely and controlling thier cars at the current limits so I'd leave them as they are until we can find a way of ensuring drivers know how to, well, drive .
I agree with the person who wants a limit for new drivers. There is a growing opinion on this and possible new laws include speed restrictors, low capacity, limited milage, curfew, limit on passengers. |

90MPH is a more realistic speed limit for motorways as people will usually travel at that speed in the outside lane anyway. |

dual carriageway 80,motorway, 90, built up areas 25, everyone well nearly everyone drives over the limit to overtake on motorways and 25 in a built up area is safer |

Given the chance I'd do the following.
Built up urban areas, to be reduced to 20mph from the hours of 8am to 6pm, after this I can't see a reason why not 30mph as schools are shut and in theory all kids should be back at home.
single national roads to be left at 60mph. Its more than enough. Though where locally roads are cut down to the urban limit in say a rural area, I would change these to 40mph and add in predestrian crossing at each end of the village.
This would mean that traffic flows easily, less emissions from constantly changing up and down speeds. Less angry motorists will be less likely to speed and hit someone accidentally.
In historic towns and city centres speed limits are to be reduced to 20mph and where possible traffic to be kept away from pedestrianised areas.
Motorways and dual carriageways, to be increased to a speed of 80mph. Everyone drives at nearly this speed and with people going 10% over 90mph is not beyond the capacity of modern cars.
With the emphassis on keeping the motorways moving and at a faster pace. The single roads should be clear.
Though I'd propse that distances between cars to be kept at a larger distance for safet yon the motorway. Less speed cameras of all types, and more police cars on the road, keeping traffic moving and stoping the dangerous drivers from tailling too close behind |

I'd like to keep all of them the same but greater enforcement via limiters etc.
All motorways turned to 4 lane ones with HGV's only allowed in the first 2
And I'd ban middle lane hogs for life, nothing worse than a clear motorway and some prat doing 55mph in the middle lane |

Leave it as it is. |

Personally I would raise the motorway limit to 90 mph for cars & motor bikes, back up to 60mph for HGV's, 70 mph for Coaches & lower the limit for transit type vans to 65 mph - Oh & ban caravans just because I could!! lol. As for dual carriageways 80 mph cars / bikes, & 60 mph for both HGV & coaches & 60 mph for vans ! In the larger vehicles it is more economical to travel at the higher speeds within the 'economy' band of these engines than in a lower gear at say 40 mph at the top end of that band.As for town driving. Local councils should be able to set speed limits to suit their particular needs, lower near schools etc, but variable throughout the 24 hour period - higher at night when less traffic is present. Get rid of the alledged 'safety camera' from all but proven accident black spots & replace with the average speed cameras to keep the traffic flowing. |

No, the speeds are suitable. Not that anyone cares anyway, theres a flashing sign at the top of my road telling people when they go over 30. It flashes all freaking day non stop. They never learn. |

motorways have no speed!!! then the rest keep the same |

25mph in built up area
50mph single carriage A roads
60mph Dual carriage ways and motor ways
With 'average speed' cameras at regular intervals on the later two and the limits strictly enforced.
All new vehicles from 2010 on to have tamper proof speed limiters fitted. Built in decibel limit on car stereos. Built in signal scrambler so mobile phone's cannot send or receive a signal whilst vehicle in motion.
Why? If you ever have the bad fortune to have to attend to the results of a high speed collision you will know why. |

Built up area 20.
Dual Carriage ways 40.
Motorways 50.
SAFETY at all times.
The manufacturers of cars, vans and lorries will HAVE to limit the speed the vehicle's can go if they are being sold to 'private' individuals. And they will have to have written permission if the vehicle is to be sold to one of the Emergency Services to have the speed limiter taken off. |
