If you cut the brakes-will the emergency brake work?

Or are they tied to the same line?

I am asking because I saw a movie tonight were someone dies because of that. I assume that auto and standard trans would work the same way?

YES - it will work (or should work if it is adjusted correctly, and in good working order).

And, NO, they are not tied to the same line.

The emergency brake does not work off of the power brake system. It is a cable system and is only for keeping the vehicle in place when parked.

It will work, but it won't stop the car anywhere nearly as quickly as regular brakes. Also, locking up the rear wheels is a good way to cause a spin.

Your best bet is to slow down by downshifting, pump the brakes to get the best out of whatever is left, as well as using the parking brake.

Yes the e-brake still works. The e-brake is a mechanical brake and the regular brakes are hydraulic.

I once got a car home when the rear brake line was burnt. I plugged off the burnt line and drove home, about 14 miles, on the back roads at a reduced speed with someone following me using just the front and e-brakes. Now when I look back on this I was real dumb to have gone this but it worked.
