Would it be 16? 17? 21? 25? 14?

The minimum requirements to drive should be a high school diploma or GED cert., completing a formal certified professional driver's ed program and be at least 18 yrs. old. This way the pressures of high school are behind the youngsters and parental approval is not required. |

Sixteen is fine with me. I see a lot of stuff on here about the accidents are high for people 16-20. The reason for that is that these are the ages of the inexperienced drivers. If you raise the age limit to 21 the accident prone years will just raise with it. Then the accident prone years will just change to 21-25. |

I think 16 is good its been like that for a while in Cali and it does fine; however the test should be a little tougher, maybe require a defensive driving course within your first 6 months and an IQ test because drives on the road today are not the smartest. |

It's not on your list, but I'm going to say 18. Reason...if your old enough to go to fight a war, you should be able to drive. I do feel that the test should be a little tougher than the regular test and should have to be retaken yearly until at least 21. If they have a bad accident, they loose their license for a year. Adults and teens are both guilty of drunk driving and cell phone abuse. JMHO. =o`) |

Insurance companies seem to think that young men are high-risk till they turn 27 yrs. I guess, in the interest of equality, we should set 27 as the age to license both men and women.
Age 21 would be more practical, though. |

non that u listed I would say 18 to 21 cause they teenagers ain't mature enough, they are to busy on their cell phones & not responsiable. But of course mommy & daddy still buy them brand new cars that get totaled quick. |

Age is irrelevant. I would make everybody ride a motorcycle for two years. If they live through that they'll earn the right to take a driving test - and the experience will make them better drivers. |

David C, I beg to differ with you; maturity has NOTHING to do with age!
Just because a person is 35 does not always make them more mature than 16. I sort of know a dude who's, like, 5 years younger than me and he can put a lot of people my age and elder to shame. |

18 but i and i would make the, driving test harder and you have to have to retake the yest and driving test test again if you got a 2 or more speeding tickets in a year, or you caused a car crash !!
i now 18 wasn't on your list but i think it is a good age because you are old enough to go to jail. |

35 - old enough to get most of the silliness out of their system. |

I'd leave it at 16...if they raise it, kids are still going to drive but now without a license and insurance and you will see YOUR insurance rates go up to cover the ones that don't have it |

No real limit.
Some factors would need to be met, though:
A) Is the person tall enough to easily reach all pedals on the car and see over the dashboard?
B) Can he/she pass the same safety tests 16+ years olds are given for their licenses now?
C) Can they pass a much harder second driving test involving congested real-world inner-city traffic?
D) ALL cars should be equipped with breath-a-lizers that force the driver to have no alcohol on their breath before driving, regardless of their age.
E) Speed limiters should be attached to cars of all drivers under around 21, maximum speed of 65mph.
---------------------------
In the end, it become a question of maturity, rather than age.
And of course younger drivers crash more, simply because they've had less years of experience behind a car.
Moving the age levels up can NOT alleviate that part of the problem.
__________________________________
That being said...by the age of about 12 (and I was a bit tall for my age), I think I could have passed these conditions. Some younger kids, by learning things like cycling and skating along public roads and obeying traffic signals, already have a good inner-sense of how to drive safely.
______________________________________...
I have a motorcycle license. And I think, anyone who wants one should have to go 2 years with a drivers license without a crash (regardless of who causes the crash) before getting one...and then pass all the above tests on a motorcycle. And a final test where you have to keep a consistent 6 second safety cushion in the middle of busy traffic and stay in someone's blind spot for no more than 1 second before getting out of it.
________
Why? Because getting hit in a car usually just means getting hurt...getting hit on a motorcycle (even if it was the other guy in the accident driving badly and you were obeying all traffic laws) often means death or permanent injury. |

21 years of age........................
Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death among 15- to 20-year olds.
According to the U.S. Department of Transportation, 3,490 drivers in this age group died in motor vehicle crashes in 2006 and an additional 272,000 were injured.
Drivers age 15- to 20-years old accounted for 12.9 percent of all the drivers involved in fatal crashes and 16 percent of all the drivers involved in police-reported crashes.
Twenty-five percent of teen drivers killed were intoxicated. In 2006 (latest data available) crashes involving 15 to 17 year olds cost more than $34 billion nationwide, in medical costs, property damage and other costs, according to an AAA analysis.
Among licensed drivers, young people between the ages of 15 and 20 have the highest rate of fatal crashes relative to other age groups, including the elderly. In fact, the risk of being involved in a fatal crash for teens is three times greater than for drivers age 65 to 69.
Immaturity and lack of driving experience are the two main factors leading to the high crash rate among teens. |

I would let people drive at any age as long as they were tall enough, and heavy enough, and were able to pass a hard driving test. |
