I would, and have.

However, I read somewhere online about how Male Chivalry is sometimes unwanted/uneccesary for women.

For example, if you want to hold a door open for a woman, she should be only a few steps behind you. If she's farther than that she feels like she has to rush to keep you from waiting too long at the door.

Another example is if you're on a bus and all the seats are taken, you offering your seat to a woman is kindly. However, the females surveyed believe that, at times, it makes them feel as if they are these sickly old women who appear to need help when are fully capable of standing on their own. And they'd prefer to stand, just like everyone else.

Or when helping a woman carry something large (ex. a suitcase), when is it appropriate to stop and let them handle it? The women surveyed felt it was a little awkward to be followed by a helping stranger, especially if they're bus/car is rather far.

But for someone elderly, a person with a physical handicap, or a mother with a load of groceries and a child in both arms, I would instantly give it up.

And for a woman, I would ask her if she would like to sit.

Sometimes they politely say no.

I am a woman and I've given up my seats many times to both elderly women and pregnant women. All the while being watched by perfectly healthy, sound, but rude young kids. Oh, well. They're not my kids. Mine would know better.

Their mothers must be so proud.

BTW...once I tried to give up my seat to an elderly man with a walker, but it insulted him. Learned my lesson on that one!

absolutely i use public transport everyday , if there were a time that the bus was full and anyone less abled than myself i would stand up straight away and offer them my seat . I do this quite often ..

I would. I am able bodied, I am very fortunate. I would give up my seat to someone who needed it worse than me.

I use public transportation all the time (mainly the metro). Whenever I see an elderly person, a mother with kids, or a disabled person I give up my seat.

Yes, but I'm accustomed to riding the bus and this is what I think everybody on there hopes happens...

Of course, I would give up myself if not long run or stuck in heavey traffic.
I mostly stand up in city buses/subway because sometimes I like to watch outdoor.
I also have problem standing for 1-hour or 2-hour.
IN NYC, one time I was on long bus, and I give up my seat for elderly.

One time there was disable homeless came aboard the bus and I give up my seat, and he say, NO THANK YOU.

One time on M60 bus which travels along 125th St/Astoria Blvd in Upper West Side to LaGuardia Airport, I was standing when I spotted man with baby come up with folded stroller, so I said, "Let me hold this for you."
So, I hold onto it while he paid his fare with MTA MetroCard and he said, "Thank you." after I helped him put stroller on some kind of stand on Hybrid Bus."
After he approach his stop, I help him get his stroller and he said, "Thank you."

Yes of course. I walk with a cane and I give up my seat for other people who need it more than me.

I always ask if they would like my seat. They can accept or decline.

It never hurts to ask.

I would give up my seat to anyone who looked to be in worse shape than me!

(I am a 60 year old female, in great shape, and would not expect someone to give up their seat to me.)

In the "old days," a man always gave up his seat to a lady; a younger person to an older person; a healthy person to an impaired person.

If you feel guilty sitting while another is standing, give him/her your seat.

I've given up my seat to elderly persons, infirm persons, obviously pregnant women, and even average-built men and women who looked a helluva lot more tired than I was... but I don't believe in giving up a seat to an obviously fine and healthy woman simply because she's female. There's no obvious handicap to being a woman on public transportation so, unless specifically asked by one of them, I would remain seated.

As a woman, i would be insulted...i'm too independent!

Unless pregnant or handicapped, that is just common courtesy!

Most of the time, yes, especially if I was only going one or two stops down the line....if the train was empty in the beginning, though, and then filled up, it would depend how cute or how creepy looking the woman was !!
