If you're under the age of 18 then you need to complete 6 hours of behind the wheel training before you are able to get your permit/license.

Although it works differently for states though, so .. I'm basing this on California.

Yes. It is not dependent upon whether you are a minor or not, you must complete the hours even if you are an adult. This is true if you have your learner's license. Once you get your learner's license you must complete a certain amount of hours with your driving instructor in addition to taking driver's ed classes. Once you have completed the course and driving hours, you can then take the provisional license test.

In the UK my two boys learned to drive an old car on private land when they were seven. Get training in as early as you can and as much as you can.

NO - not in the UK....

since you used the expression "behind the wheel training", which is commonly used in the UK when referring to "private driving lessons", i'm thinking you're probably from the UK, eh?!...

however, the UK's DSA *recommends* that you have behind the wheel training - here's what they have to say:

"It is unlikely that anyone except an approved driving instructor (ADI) would have the experience, knowledge and training to teach you properly. Recent surveys indicate that 9 in 10 learners who passed both theory and practical tests first time were taught by an instructor."
