Im scared of driving..please help?

Dear Erica, Most beginning drivers have no fear and that is worse. You are so smart to know that driving is to be respected. I have this terrible fear of lightning. Turning your fears over to a higher power, God does help. You will be fine. Start with short trips. Just tell yourself that you can always pull off the road and stop if you need to. I have been driving for 25 years and I get scared still at night on unfamiliar roads. But I love the independence of being able to come and go when I want. You will be fine. Believe in you!!

You will become more confident the more you drive. While practicing, just make sure you stay focused...no cell phones or even the radio. You'll be fine! Relax and go take that drivers test!

Just calm down. Sounds like you are over achieving or trying too hard. Driving takes practice like anything else. Just pace yourself.
A little helpful advice, don't concentrate on any one thing. When you look at one thing such as the lines on the road or on coming traffic, you will shift towards them...
Heck the hand over thingy is mainly for the cars made just after the horse and buggy came along. Cars without power steering. It took alot of muscle to turn those cars and hand over was a good way to pull and hold the wheel while making a turn. I do use the 10 and 2 rule of holding the wheel.

Erica. The first thing is to relax. Stop for a few seconds as you read this and look away from the computer, No I MEAN IT!!! Look away for 30 seconds. NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

OK If you did look away you had time to think. Just remember 1 thing. No one is watching you. You don`t have to do hand over hand., just keep one hand on the wheel, and do it like you were skating or dancing to a slow song. Also there are no stupid mistakes, just unfortunate results.Feel comfortable with yourself, ignore the critisism,and Please be carefull.

When I was a kid I used to go and practise in parking lots when the stores were closed, lot of room and no other cars so you get used to how a car steers and can practise parking and such. You just need more experience and confidence. No one is born knowing everything about driving, it's not hard when you get used to it. Good luck.

You might have to consider that you might not be a driver. For your own safety, you should consider moving to somewhere there are public transportations (many people in NYC don't even have driver's license - nor even think about getting it).

I had the same problem when I started to drive. (I finally got my license after I turned 18) I HATED it. but the more you do it the less nerve-racking it will be. Before you go to take the driving part of your test, try to find out where the instructor will tell you to go, and practice the route.

For your turns try setting up some plastic cones, or some plastic things you don't mind running over a few times, set several of them a ways apart and do figure eights around them, gradually move them closer together, and then if you are feeling brave do figure eights in reverse. (That's what my driver's ed teacher had us do) It was a lot of fun =P.

Try not to worry too much about it, you will get the hang of it =P
