In California, how many feet do you have to keep between you and the car in front of you while in motion?

On a city street. Thanks

There is no fixed distance. By "city street," you could be descibing a 25 mph residential street or a 40 mph boulevard.

The safe following distance would be different in each of these situation. The two or three car length distance that is safe at 25 mph is about half of that required at 40.

You could use the "car length for each 10 mph" rule, but most people are not that good at judging car lengths. Especially while they are moving and the car in front is also moving, perhaps at a different rate of speed.

For years, people have advocated a "two second" rule, stating that one should not follow any closer than two seconds behind another car. It's a good thought because no measuring is required. All one has to do is count, "one thousand one, one thousand two..." This method has the advantage of being automatically self adjusting. The faster you are moving, the greater distance two seconds covers.

However, in recent years, National Safety Council has advocated a following distance of three seconds because two seconds of following distance may not be enough in some situations.

By the way, do you know what the AVERAGE freeway following distance is on US highways? ONE SECOND.

Yikes!

far enough back, that you don't hit them if they stop... if you hit them, you were too close...
