I have a Graco infant car seat and when we switch cars, I don't always use the base. I was told by a friend it was illegal. I have never heard this before. Does anyone know?
Additional Details
I keep my nephews once a week and when they are dropped off to me, they don't leave the infant carseat base. Is it against the law for me to take them in the car without the base?

It is never against the law to install a seat in a way the directions allow... and they *are* designed to be used with or *without* the base! The base simply makes installation faster and easier.
I would ask to see the directions or look them up with the model numbers on the seat here: http://www.gracobaby.com/Catalog/Pages/CarSeat.aspx?N=41%2010417&catid=10:41%7C%7C1 These would show you exactly how to install the seat without the base. Then I would pratice getting a nice tight install... even take it to a certified car seat tech to see that you are doing it right if possible. If you are very concerned about your ablity to install it you could also buy a second base to have in your car.
You may be interested to know that in crash tests infant seats have actually performed slightly *better* when installed without the base... if they are installed correctly. Again, that is all the base is for... to make a correct install quick and easy.
Edit to add this info *also* found in the link below with capitals for emphasis: "An infant seat is a seat that faces the back of the car, never the front. Infant seats are designed to fit newborns up to about 20-22 lbs. Most are designed to be used as a car seat and carrier, and have some type of handle to allow you to transport baby from car to restaurant, home, shopping, etc. Most come with a base that stays in the car, there are a few that do not have bases. MOST SEATS THAT HAVE A BASE CAN ALSO BE INSTALLED WITHOUT IT. "

Yes it is illegal to have a child seat with out base Check with the local police They will advice you better( Do no take the children to the police station in the car with this system as you may be fined) |
