There's a lot of people in the USA who do not have or own their own car.
* The bus companies stay in business. If everyone was driving their own cars, the bus companies would go out of business. Ditto taxi companies, urban rail, etc.
* People cannot get a driver's license until they are almost adults. There is also insurance and money to buy a car, and fill it up with gasoline. There's a lot of children who do not have these resources.
* People often use cars to commute to work, school, etc. but after retirement have less need for this, unless retirement involves driving a motor home around the nation.
* Do you know about the homeless?

No, lots of cities have good public transit and lots of decent people use it. It's too much trouble to own a car in New York City or San Francisco or dozens of other cities. That's what ZipCar is for. |

Pretty much so, except for maybe New York where they have good public transportation, real estate is precious and parking is hugely expensive. In a lot of other metro areas people may commute by public transportation 5 days a week but still have a car at home for other trips. We Americans LOVE our cars! |
