In a front wheel drive vehicle, should the tires with better tread be in the front or rear?

It makes more sense to me that the better tires be on the front since those are the tires that are steering and also driving the car forward. i've heard that the better tires should be in the rear though. which is correct?

The people who answered front are WRONG, WRONG, WRONG, and did I mention they were wrong? Think about it. You have the best tires on the front, and hit slippery conditions. Your back end breaks loose, and you are in an uncontrollable skid before you can possibly react.
There is a reason most reputable shops will refuse to put 2 new tires on the front, unless your rear tires are almost new.
Let's face it, there is no point in being able to get moving on ice if you can't control the car.
Go to this link. At the bottom of the page, click on the link with the name "watch a short video to learn more". It explains why you need best traction on the road, and shows you what happens if you don't follow the advice.

A BLOWOUT ! ... is more dangerous on the rear wheels. The reason is that you still have some control over the front wheels if a front tire blows out, but you lose all control over your rear wheels if they blow out.

You should have 4 tires with good tread. BUT! If you only have two good tires, they should be firstly on the wheels steering the vehicle (for most cars that's the front two), and secondly on the tires doing the traction (in this case also the fronts).

However, if you have two bald tires in the back and you hit a patch of water - or worse yet, ice - and the two back wheels spin freely, you'll slide out your rear end and perform some really nice wheelies, and potentially roll over; depending on vehicle size and type.

Remember, you have at least 3000+ pounds of steel, plastic and lives riding on a few inches of rubber. Tires are not that expensive as replacing a car, or potentially taking away a life.

Rear, always. Makes little difference on dry pavement, once things turn slippery you want the rear end to stay planted. For a detailed explanation from tire experts at Michelin see the link below.
Tirerack also has a well written explanation of why the best tires go on the REAR of ANY vehicle ALWAYS.
Finaly: all the geniuses advocating the tires go in the front, where are your technical articles supporting your position?, not a single one.

It really doesn't make a lot of difference unless the road is wet or icy. If you have the better tread on the rear the car will skid forward allowing you to go bumper first. If you have the better tires on the front it would give you less slide that could cause the rear to turn around giving you less control This article explains it pretty well.

Front

Think about it, the front wheels put the power to the pavement, do the turning, and most of the braking.

Always in the front.........

on any vehicle your drive tires (front tires ) should always be your best tires . technically ... your front tires should have at least 4/32 tread depth . rear tires should have at least 2/32 tread depth .
