In flight safety procedures - will they break your neck?
|
this is a question going around my family - during an aeroplane flight - in the case on an emergency landing where you brace your head against the seat in front - would this position case you to break your neck? surely it's better to put your head in between your knees or similar?
cheers

I hate answers like "Insominac" where he simply states, "it has been said.." Especially when the facts don't bear up.
In fact, in cases where a plane manages to come down in a fairly controlled crash, even where it is damaged and flips over, MOST passenges manage to get out safely. In fact, in such impacts, it is not the crash that kills passengers, it is the resulting fire. In other words, if the passenger manages to survive the impact, (by assuming the crash position) then he is able to get out BEFORE being overcome by smoke and fire.
By the way, do you know of anyone that has the room to put his head between his knees while sitting in a coach class seat? |

really it only helps a little if landing but in a crash most likely it wont matter |

Brace the TOP of your head against the seatback in front of you.
Considering crash dynamics, it seems likely that the head between the knees might result in getting stuck in that position when all the motion has stopped. The broken seat in front of you (if its still there) returns to its sloping position over your head. Actually, the safety authorities know that rear-facing seats are the safest in a crash. They're not in use because passengers want to face forward. |

If your head becomes Jolted, then there is a chance that the neck can be broken or damaged.
If the aircraft passenger seats had decent retainment methods, this risk would not occur. |

Mythbusters did this one.
It is the safest position to be in during a crash.

Actually yes. The reason why that position is dangerous is because your head and neck are facing forward. What I mean is that if your head and neck are facing forward and there is impact then your head will sway backward because of the force. Think about it. In an accident the impact sends your head forward and backward. If you have your head against the seat in front of you, then your neck and back of your head is exposed. That means upon impact your neck will move backward causing more neck and spinal injury. |

common sense

no this will not break your neck unless the you land and the plane blows up on impact |
|

Please punctuate properly folks.
|
No it isn't! the rapid acceleration as the plane stops, and the violent impact with the seat in front would be much more severe. It all depends on the impact speed of course. It has been said that in the event of a plane crash, you can pretty much put your head between your legs, and kiss your A5$ goodbye! |

I don't understand why regular planes don't have the ejecting seats like fighter jets. That would save alot of lives if the plane goes down. I don't get it. Additional Details
