In addition to states own requirements, the Feds have safety standards under the Commercial Vehicle Saftey Alliance (CVSA). This is generally implemented by state troopers who have been trained under CVSA guidelines as Motor Carrier Enforcement officer, or DOT or diesel bears, as the truckers refer to them.

States that don't have formal inspection requirements (AR, CA, OK, for sure) still inspect vehicles randomly. With commercial vehicles, this isn't all that random; it's very common to be pulled out of line at a weigh station for a comprehensive safety inspection. It is also common to have inspectors roaming around at truck stops and doing safety checks while the driver is getting a meal, or whatever. This is true even in states with formal inspection requirements such as TX, MA and MO. |

ALL 50 states have truck safety inspection requirements. Some states are of course more strict than others. Check with your local DMV or highway patrol office.
The Federal guidelines are way too long and confusing, so the states have simplified the basics... |
