Is 4 WD considered a traction device?

When it is announced that traction devices are required for travel, is 4 WD sufficient? Or, do you have to use chains/studded tires?

No, 4wd is not a tracton device. Traction deveices are things that attach to your tires, like chains, cables or studded tires. Many western states require them when roads are icy. Either get some and learn how to use them or don't drive when they are required. Be safe.

depends some times four wheel drive are in and sometime they mean stay off road unless you got chains or studs really depend is it snow or is it ice snow not that bad and 4 wheel should be ok with or without ice stay at home

My first suggestion is that you check the definition of "traction devices" from the originator of the requirement. In some states 4WD is considered traction assistance. Cables, chains and studded tires are considered traction devices. So is ETC in some of the newer cars. "Bridgestone Blizzak" and "Michelin X-Ice xi2" dedicated snow tires are designed to be studless and are probably the best available in the market today.

What you must acknowledge: Four-wheel drive does NOT mean four-wheel steer or four-wheel stop...especially on ice. Physics will win every time.
