By law you must use a Helmet whilst on uk roads. That is the ONLY piece of protective equipment you must wear.
I cant say i would advise wearing just a helmet, I personally have a full set of textile protective gear i.e trousers jacket and some 'draggin' jeans. not to mention gloves.
Just think the less you wear the more skin will come off if you fall off!! |

sure, the only legal requirement is a helmet but i wouldn't advise not wearing them |

its not illegal not to wear protective clothing, but anyone that is thinking of belting around on a Fireblade in a T shirt and shorts (and people do) should look at some pics of gravel rash from a crash, stripped skin and muscle is not at all pretty |

I haven't seen anyone on a motorbike over 50cc without full or half leather gear... |

You are required to wear a helmet. |

Helmet is needed with a British Standard mark unless you are a Sikh and you are then allowed to wear a turban instead.
As far as the rest goes, it is your choice. Only you can decide if you want to wear protective clothing. |

There is no legal requirement in UK to wear any protective gear other than a helmet but most people have the common sense to wear some sort of protection. |

An approved crash helmet is a the ONLY legally required item of protective motorcycle gear required in the U.K.
You could legally ride around in your underwear, as long as you've got a crash helmet on your head (bizarre, but true...).
However, as already mentioned, for your own safety, proper boots, gloves, trousers and a jacket will save you a whole load of physical pain. |

i know how you feel the other day i was trying to be cool while listening to my gadgetronx in ear earphones without a helmet and almost got nailed by the cops. England's laws seem to be the same as US laws in that you must wear the helmet while operating the motorcycle on the open road. |

legally, yes.
there is no requirement to wear anything other that helmet that conforms to the minimum safety requirements as mentioned in another answer.
there are other options on the market other than what can be quite bulky motorcycle clothing, including mesh jackets (complete with armour) and kevlar jeans, so there's no longer any real reason not to wear protective kit.
for more info on the available types of motorcycle clothing available, have a look at www.ukbikegear.com where you'll find plenty of options! |

Legal? don't know. There is nothing legal or illegal in England. |
