Is it legal to drive a car without back seat shoulder straps with children on a trip? We're going from Kentucky through West Virginia to Virginia Beach, VA. It does have lap belts just not shoulder straps. It is an '84 Lincoln, very sturdy and will mainly be used for the trip. One child is 13, at 5 ft 10, the other is 8, at 4 ft 6. If not, what would you recommend we do?

I am an auto mechanic and going to school for state inspection therfore I know it is completely legal to use the lap belts like they are but make sure you have your 8 year in a booster seat when in VA. That is a law here that they really stick to.

yes. actually, using the seat belts available in any car at time of purchase is legal. they don't, and can't, require that you retrofit a car. |

rear seatbelts have yet to be made a law as far as i know. The only laws that im aware of are, that you are using available restraints for young children (car seat), and front seatbelt usage. also the laws are such that you are only required to use what is originally installed in the car. so if it came with lap belts, you only have to use lap belts. |

Its an 84 They didn't have shoulder straps back then in back seats. Your oldest should be fine the other one may need a booster seat. |

if it has lap belts sure but maybe for your eight year old a booster seat or triangle pad |

The seat belts that came with the car at time of manufacture are legal. You cannot be forced to retrofit them to a newer style. If they need car seats then use them if not then enjoy the trip |

However, the 8 year old may need to be in a lap-booster seat to position the seat belt properly. |

my boyfriend is a former mechanic and he says if it needed shoulder straps by the yr 1984 then it would have them standard...so it should be fine. u may want to check into that with local laws just to be safe. |

yes. Make sure the belts are snug (not too snug). |
