Is driving becoming more dangerous?

Traffic deaths declined for years, bottoming out at 39,250 killed in 1992, then began to increase again. In 2002, 42,815 people died in traffic accidents. But more vehicles drove more miles in 2002 than in 1992. In fact, the government says that motor vehicles traveled 2247 billion miles in 1992 and 2830 billion miles in 2002. Reports on transportation use deaths per 100 million miles as a measure of risk. Compare the rates for 1992 and 2002. What do you conclude?

Yes.............
Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death among 15- to 20-year olds.
According to the U.S. Department of Transportation, 3,490 drivers in this age group died in motor vehicle crashes in 2006 and an additional 272,000 were injured.
Drivers age 15- to 20-years old accounted for 12.9 percent of all the drivers involved in fatal crashes and 16 percent of all the drivers involved in police-reported crashes.
Twenty-five percent of teen drivers killed were intoxicated. In 2002 (latest data available) the estimated economic cost of police-reported crashes involving drivers between the ages of 15 and 20 was $40.8 billion, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. |

It's technology. The news car, trucks, there built for speed, agility, the cell phones, all the music today. Someone could be trying to play something while driving. The population is growing, that means more people on the road. |

too many people are becoming "look after number one"... and .... "it will never happen to me"... so when you are on the road you have to always allow for the other idiot and basically never trust anyone else on the road |

I think it is a combination of the increase in the number of cars plus the increase in the number of distractions (cell phones, etc.) |

I really believe that I am a good driver. I've learned from my mom, who has been driving for 30 years and hasn't been in one accident yet. *knock on wood* And yet I've gotten ran into multiple times, and not been at fault. There's more and more people driving druck, drugged up, visually impaired, or physically impaired. The people at the Department or Licensing must be just handing out free Drivers cards these days. |

Remember scince 1992, more people have started to drive!
More younger people are starting to drive-and when they do they enjoy races!
People from other countries who have got their license over there may not qualify for the driving standards in the UK. |
