In many places around the world, the use of hand-held cell phones while driving has been banned, but wireless devices such as bluetooth are a generally accepted safer form of cell phone communication, and are thus allowed.
So, is driving while talking on a wireless device actually safer than driving while talking on a hand-held cell phone?

Relatively, yes. A hand held device requires the use of hands ... therefore less control over the vehicle.
But talking on the phone, whether wireless or handheld, is very dangerous no matter if it's legal or not. You're distracted from the road, and your responses to hazards will be less effective. |

No, it is NOT safer. A driver talking on a phone ,hand held or hands free exhibits the same characteristics as a drunk driver.
The exemption has nothing to do with safety. New drivers are forbidden to have phones in their cars for the first six months they are licensed. That should tell you that driving while using one is unsafe, yet, they are not banned in my state. |

Statistically, no. The incidence of accidents is the same. This suggestions that accidents are actually caused by the distraction of having a telephone conversation while driving, not by holding the phone. To confirm this, a study in which drivers are asked to hold phones to their ears, but not use the phones, should be conducted. |
