if the car is locked

It's unfortunate that we live in fear and have to even ask questions like this. 20 or 30 years ago the answer was sure, not a problem and even today, 9,999 times out of 10,000 it would be fine.

The other thing is, there is risk in life and risk in any decision passive or active, that you make. So, if your asking what would I do, I'd lock the car and take care of business as efficiently as possible. If your asking what would I advise I'd say look carefully at the situation, be aware of your surroundings and then trust your judgement. If there's any doubt, take the child with you.

Only if you want to be arrested and charged with neglect.

As an example of why you shouldn't do this --

A couple of years ago in Staines (surrey - UK)
A man arrived at a garage with a child sleeping in the back.
He left the child and went into the garage to buy a spare part.
He was a couple of minutes.
In that time the child had woken up, got out of the car seat and started paying with the dad's lighter.
The child died later in hospital from horrific burns.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE DO NOT LEAVE YOUR CHILD UNATTENDED IN A CAR AT ANY TIME!

As a system you should not do such a thing. Nothing might happen, but then again, something might... not to be pessimistic, but it's better to take your kid out, rather than leaving him/her inside.

What do you mean by 'is it OK'? I am not sure of what legal position there is on this, if any. Assuming there is no law saying it isn't 'OK' - I would suggest deciding is a matter for you and your own standards of parenting. People are too paranoid these days, I would say that.

crikey being a parent must be scary. I would never have thought of worrying about this - just as well I don't have kids....urm, I would say, better safe than sorry and take the kiddy with you whilst it is too young to get out of the car on it's own in an emergency.

smiler
i would as long as i had locked it and i had good view of car.

yep just lock the car door and keep watching the car

I dont really think it is i would rather wake my child then leave in the car, eight times out of ten the child would fall back to sleep when the car started again anyway. These types of questions and what do i dos? is the main reason why i havnt learnt to drive,

Scott R
YES BUT LOK THE CAR DOOR AND MAKE SURE THERE ISNT A CUE AND KEEP YOUR EYE ON THE CAR

Yes, providing the car is locked, but then it's a good idea to ensure your car is locked at all times when you are out of it at a petrol station, especially when you are paying for petrol, or buying things from the shop there. I knew someone who left his unlocked while he went to pay, and as he was paying saw his car being driven off.

Best take the child with you, you never know

Yes as long as you dont get chating to a friend you havent seen for months and lose track of time, and also make sure you have your eye on the car, and that the doors are locked.

As long as the car is locked - just for safety reasons. I can imagine there’s nothing worse than waking up a sleeping baby especially if it wakes up moody.

lock the doors

Yep
Maybe say as long as the kid is arm length away when out in the public. So paying at the pump.

In my opinion yes, as long as you have a clear view of the car from the walk to the cashier and the car is never out of your sight even for a split second.

button moon
yes i would lock it and leave the car in full view, so i can see it from wherever i am going to be stood whilst paying, or i would wait and do it later, if its a short journey im sure the car will have enough to get home and then back for petrol again, even on red it still has a few miles left in it

Umm, not a good idea! Take the munchkin with you. I would rather have a safe cranky child that the opposite.

Sheesh...

No. plenty of cars get stolen with kids inside regardless of whether the car is locked. I know its a pain but its always best to take them in the shop with you

I know its tempting, but imagine a armed robbery. They could crash into your car, also if the poor thing woke he would be wondering where you were and where he was.
