I just turned 20 and still cannot drive. I haven't even went for my permit. I've been in numerous accidents, and am terrified. I hate being stuck inside while my husband is at work. How can I conquer my fear?

Go take driving school, that is what they are for! Let them know that you are hesitant in learning to drive so that they focus on helping you over come your fears. Once you get your license, have hubby take you to areas that do not have much traffic, like industrial parks just being built or housing tracks just being built, mall parking lots late at night when all these places are closed and drive around, and practice parking. Ask a friend to do this with you at night if hubby would make you nervous. Don't drive without a license besides during the schooling. You might want to do this a few nights a week, for a few weeks, or a few months to get used to it. Once you do all this, you will be a very good driver. Always remember, treat all other drivers as if they are asleep and give them the right away, never trust the other drivers around you, pretend they never see you, that way, you are the cautious driver and will have the time to make judgments in your driving to keep you safe! |

I would say just have faith. You could get hit by a bus walking, so are you gonna not walk outside of the house? Kwim? If anything is going to happen, its meant to. Once you start driving you will feel more comfortable. Just be cautious. And good luck! :) |

You've started on conquering your fear by admitting your fear. Just go to a good driving school, tell them why you waited so long, and then GO FOR IT!
I'm sending my wife to driving school right now [she's 28; but in her case her mother didn't think she was worthy enough to drive]
Some of the above answers state treat every other driver like they were asleep; that's a good idea. I treat them like they have their heads so far up their rears they can't see.
Just listen to the instructor[s]; when you get your license, drive like you were taught -- not like every one else.
I just hate it when people do NOT come to a complete, discernable stop at a stop sign; and when they do, they don't stop where they are supposed to -- the crosswalk is NOT for you to stop in. |
