Is it dangerous to drive about with a car that has an excessively loose anti rollbar link on the nearside?

It is an anti roll bar - a roll bar's a thing that protect you if your car rolls: It's annoying & noisy & will affect your handling slightly, but it's not dangerous: As someone else pointed out, a lot of cars aren't fitted with them at all.

Desert Camel is correct it is not dangerous. It normally just causes an annoying knocking noise. but it may break and then damage something else. So best to get it changed. just because it fails an MOT does not make it dangerous. would you not drive a car because it has a chip on the windscreen ?

Anything that is loose in the suspension system of a car is never a good thing. I would recommend you repair or replace what ever needs to be done to correct the problem before you drive the car again. Even though it is just an anti Sway bar, you should have it replaced or repaired. If it comes loose all together, it can cause more damage to other parts of the suspension

As the others mentioned, It is not dangerous that the actual Roll Bar link is loose or worn. What makes it risky is that it could completely break and effect something else. eg. could rub against a Drive Shaft or worse the wheel !

Yes many cars do have an anti-roll bar or also sometimes called an anti-sway bar. And it is not that dangerous to drive with out the links. The car might have a little more body roll when turning, but you probably wont even notice.

Maybe not but I wouldn't recommend it

As such, it is not dangerous in a critical sense. The constant clattering sound may be a source of unease. The anti-roll bar prevents the car from swaying too much on bends and curves. Drive carefully during these phases of driving and you would neither endanger yourself nor the car. The remedy would be to replace the bushes, which is neither time consuming nor are expensive.

If it's ONLY an anti-sway bar, then the worst problem will be that its vibration may chew up the place it mounts to, making it much more expensive to repair later.

However in some cars, anti-sway bars also have other functions that are more critical to the suspension, like controlling front-back motion of the wheel.

desert camel
NO IT'S NOT....corse u can.early cars wernt even fitted with them...although they make the car handle better on corners it will be ok even if it brakes[providing it doesnt foul enything else]....
all the antiroll bar does is ,when cornering, it forces the opposit wheel down onto the road to give better traction/roadholding...cars with out just roll into the corners, swaying a little...

Is no such thing as an anti-roll bar, just a roll bar and no, because most normal cars don't have them.
