We have a queen mattress set (boxspring and mattress) that we need moved, we live 4 hours (250miles) away though. I tried to look up some freight places but they're all expensive and not worth it considering our mattress isn't that new. I don't want to buy a new one bc I'm cheap so do you think if we secured it to the top of my fiance's expedition it'd be okay for the ride?

NOT WORTH THE RISK!
Please for every ones safety - rent a U-Haul truck or trailer to move your mattress or buy a new one when you get to your destination.
You have no idea how many mattresses I have seen on the side of the road and when it comes off - if it causes an accident you will be liable for all the damages to all vehicles involved. Definitely not worth the risk! |

Rent a U-Haul, trying to tie something that size to the top of a vehicle isn't safe.
Get a Pick-up or a Cargo Van or even a small utility trailer. |

Your best bet is to get a rental vehicle big enough to accommodate both pieces inside the vehicle. That way you do not have to worry about the material falling off your vehicle. I ran over a mattress on the freeway with a van conversion. It jammed underneath and ultimately caught fire and destroyed the van.
If you decide to put them on fiance's SUV, check the owner's manual to see how much weight you can put on top of the vehicle. Be advised that this will make the vehicle more top heavy than it already is. Also, recommend that you get a plastic 'baggie' for each piece to keep the bugs and moisture off them. |

Tie it down really, really well and drive no faster than 50mph.
Stop regularly and check to see how it's holding up on your roof.
I'd say the odds of losing it are 60/40 in your favor. |

You will be fine as long as use 2 or 3 sets of motorcycle tie downs and that will work just fine, I have done it many times... |
