Is it deemed unsafe for individuals to be listening to music through personal headphones in the workplace?

Not only unsafe but inappropriate.

Depends. I had a data entry job where this was fine- no customers about or safety issues, but then when I was working in a warehouse it wasn't allowed- walking round a corner and meeting with the business end of a forklift tends to wreck your day...

It is usually a safety issue, due to the possibility of you failing to hear an alarm or, for that matter, someone calling out to warn you.

My staff are forbidden to use personal earphones for this reason, they are also prohibited from having their mobiles on "ring" because that's bloody irritating. They either turn them off or put them on "vibrate".

WDOUI is mean.

If the workplace is a small, office environment where there is a lot of typing involved, then it is a very good idea to allow workers to use personal headphones, so long as they are not so loud that others can hear the music.

It is only unsafe if the headphones are so loud that they drone out the fire alarm.

PS it's kind of obvious who thumbed me down!

cough *WDOUI* cough

yes, do some work u lazy git!

It is absolutely unsafe. It is also impractical, unprofessional and downright rude.

Why rude? At work you work as part of a team, people talk, phones ring etc etc etc

But the main issue is safety.

depends on the working environment but 9 times out of 10 it is either unsafe or unconventional

Yes
you would have limited hearing and thus could miss a critical safety issue such as an alarm or a person falling or even someone coming up behind you.

Short answer "Yes".....

WDOUI
It is unsafe and unprofessional. I would fire anyone doing this
