I didn't do it but I'm just curious, cause I know if the door is unlocked and they go in your car then they won't get charged for anything.
Additional Details
A cop told me that they can't do anything to prosecute the person if your doors aren't locked when they go into your car.

Yes. If the car doesn't belong to you, it is 100% against the law to take it.
That said, the insurance may not cover the owner's loss, if the keys are left in it. |

I know a similar situation where my mom had her radio stolen out of the car and the police did take a report but when it came to the insurance company they're really the ones that wouldn't do anything...you're fault. Even if you left your doors unlocked and keys in the ignition, that doesn't give the thief permission to steal your car and if found they will be prosecuted. It's the insurance company that wouldn't compensate you. I'm sure the cops would get a good laugh out of you if that did happen, lol. |

Yes, they will. Not sure why you think you "know" otherwise.
If you remove someone's vehicle, without permission: It's grand theft auto.
Whether you use a key, hotwire, or a rubber chicken. It's still the same crime.
However, if all they're doing is opening the door, then that's trespassing. |

So if i leave my car unlocked its ok to take it?? I hope i never have to deal with that cop buddy of yours. That makes just as much sense as having all rights to take someones briefcase once they put it on the ground. |

well he's stupid. If someone other than the owner takes a car without consent, it's called theft. WTF. Keys locks or not. Jesus i leave my keys in the ignition almost all of the time, it does not give someone permission to break the law. |
