No it isn't
Some cars such as the Mini and honda civic do not come with spare wheels, just a repair canister to re-inflate a punctured tyre

Spare tyre
There is no legal obligation to carry a spare tyre and it does not have to comply with the legal requirements while it is stowed away. However, when fitted to the vehicle (for example, following a puncture) it must then comply with the law. A spare tyre is not a testable item in the MOT test, though the examiner may draw your attention to an unserviceable item as a matter of courtesy.

You do not need a spare wheel, and if you have one it does not need to be any good.
You are only committing an offence if you have the faulty tyre/wheel in contact with the road.
As already stated the spare tyre and condition does not form part of the MOT test either.
Edit: Think about it . If it was illegal then you get a puncture swap wheels and if your unlucky enough to get stopped then you would get fined for having a faulty spare ! |

It wouldn't surprise me one little bit.Most things are now illegal in Britain,things like using a walking stick, feeding ducks and putting the wrong sort of rubbish in your bin are now punishable offences.

There is some confusion here.
You do not have to carry a spare wheel in the UK. As has been stated, some cars such as the Smart do not even have a spare on board from new.
If you do carry a "wheel" then it does not have to have a legal tyre fitted. After all, you could just be transporting it to somewhere.
BUT
If you carry a wheel and call it a "Spare" then that is explicitly stating that you will use it if you have a puncture. It would definitely be an offence if you fitted it to your car.
The condition and air pressure of the spare wheel are inspected as part of the MOT test.
If you don't carry a serviceable spare wheel and you have a puncture on the highway it will cost you a huge amount of money to be rescued. If this happens on a motorway then the cost could easily be ÂŁhundreds (which would buy you lots of spare tyres).
Don't take the advice to "drive on the rim" with a flat tyre. That is illegal unless it is for a very short distance indeed. If the police see you then you will definitely be prosecuted.
The fine will be more than the cost of a serviceable spare - and you'll still have to pay for recovery and you will have to pay for the ruined wheel rim too. An extremely expensive exercise. |
