Is it illegal to not stop at a stop sign in a parking lot?

No it is not illegal to ignore stop signs in a private parking lot.

Signs placed on the public roadways are placed in strict compliance with traffic laws, and are placed according to uniform traffic control rules.

Private parking lots have no controls. Any business owner can throw anything up he likes, and many times the do, with no knowledge of what they are doing.

If it is a privately owned parking lot, the signs are not controlled, not placed according to the uniform rules, and as such cannot be enforced by police. The most that could happen is the security guards tell you to leave.

Not if it's a private lot. The police have no traffic control jurisdiction on private property; they can enforce traffic control devices on public ways only. A public way is a road or bridge or parkway owned by the state, county, or local government. The worst that could happen to a violator would be banishment from the property by the owner and possible criminal trespassing charges if you fail to comply.

A friend of mine got into a accident in a grocery store parking lot the guy in the Benz wanted her to get a ticket for causing the accident. The cop he could not give her one because it happened on private property. That was in Texas. I was working an accident in Colorado in a mall parking lot the people claiming to be hurt wanted the people that hit them to get the ticket the sheriff said he could not issue a ticket because it was on private property. So, I am going to guess that this is common in all states and you may want to look it up in your state.

Depends if the Parking Lot is Private Property or Not. If it's on private property the sign is just a "Traffic Aide" not a legal Traffic Sign.

Yes, it's considered a traffic control device. I know some state's I've lived in have laws about stopping when pulling out of a driveway/parking lot. If you don't stop-whether there's a sign or not it's illegal.

pending on state law I would say yes. any officer can ticket you in violation of failure to yeild or running a stop light. this also falls under a safety issue as well. play it safe and keep the money in your pocket.

A stop sign posted anywhere is a stop sign and you must stop. I know many people in my area "slow and go" at stop signs on busy streets. Really annoys the heck out of me.

If its posted, its legal. they can still ticket you for it, if you're caught. However, most parking lots are private property owned by the business, so the chances of getting a ticket, are not very high. Hownever...the security guards may be able to give you a ticket.
