It does not matter if the car was parked legally or illegally, the fault for the collision, and the liability for any and all damage belongs to your girlfriend!

The highway code says you should always park on the correct side of the road, in the direction of traffic flow, and on any road with a speed limit greater than 30 Mph two lights must be left on front and rear unless there are street lights.

The fact that the car may have been parked improperly in no way excuses your girlfriend from hitting it, and lets face it, if the car was other way round it would have been perfectly all right, but she still wouldn't have expected it to be there!!

Parking facing the wrong direction is a good way to get a ticket but it would be hard to get out of paying damages to the owner if you run into a parked car...sorry.

yes, its an offence. but she will have to take the other driver to court to claim damages. (goto the small claims court)

but, he could counter claim driving without due care and attention...

UK yes illegal, should be nearside to kerb, difficult in one way street on right! and have sidelights on at night unless there are street lights

By definition, there really is not a "wrong side" to a cul de sac.... it's a circle. It's her fault for being careless, and in a residential area, the parking enforcement is probably less rigid than in a downtown area. I seriously doubt that you have any recourse against the other party for parking in the fashion that they did. That's just my opinion though. Good luck.

If the car was parked illegally, it can be ticketed. Illegal or not, the car wasn't moving, and she hit it. I would think it doesn't matter what country you are in, it isn't open season on parked cars.

Is there a reversing light on your car?
Does it work?

Did the other car have reflective number plates?

Does your girlfriend have impaired vision?

I think she's probably guilty of driving without due care and attention.

It is not illegal, but it is safer for you to park the other way, as the back of all UK cars have reflectors in the tail lights, and there are no reflectors at the front. That way, all cars approaching yours will see your vehicle much easier

I have asked this very question of Greater Manchester Police and have been told it is not an offence to park the wrong way round at nighttime (when it is dark) and even if it is part on the pavement. The only restriction I am told is if the vehicle is causing an obstruction. I would welcome a qualified solicitors view on this.
