There are different terms and laws, however it IS highly illegal, and is ticketed in Australia.
For example, in New South Wales, tailgating is specifically an offence under the new "Traffic and Crimes Amendment - Menacing and Predatory Driving" Bill. |

Yes, it's illegal in most countries, though I've noticed police tend to turn a blind eye.
I usually slow down (to allow them to pass and create a situation), though a number of tailgaters have thought I was doing this to annoy them even more, so go the full whack and pull evil looks through the rear mirror and give them the finger! |

I do not know anywhere in the world where tailgating is legal. Or considered safe. Because it is neither safe or legal.
Most laws are put in place to help prevent accidents.
But sadly, tailgating at least what I see here in the Chicago, Illinois USA area is worse than ever.
Roads were extremely icy last Wednesday. Yet, I had a guy so close behind me I could not see the car's headlights. If I had to stop for a stoplight, because of my car being equipped with snow and ice tires, I would stop much faster that guy behind me. Which would mean my car would be customized with an imprint of his car into my trunk. Idiot. |

It's not illegal to tailgate anywhere just if a cop catches it you get a small fine in some places others they really don't care that much |
