Is it legal to have 5 people in a Landrover freelander? It has got only 4 seats?

I am not sure of rules in UK... i am thinking of buying a freelander... it has got only 4 seats but the owner thinks its legal to sit 3 people on the back side... if its illegal wht happens when I am stopped by police?

What's the rule on seatbelts? - It's against the law not to wear one.

If you can divide 4 by 5 and get a positive number then it will be legal!!

i highly doubt its legal, the law is that there has to be enough seat belts for each passenger, if theres only 2 seat belts in the back then no you cant have more people in the back

and if you were to crash or be in an accident and that person came out the car it would be your fault as the driver as you were in charge of the car

As above, if there are four seatbelts, it's only legal in the UK to transport four people.

The Freelander 3door came with 4 seats as standard, and 5 seats as a factory option. The 5door was the opposite.

To carry 5 people legally you will need to either:
buy a 5-seat version
or
convert a 4-seat version by replacing the rear seats with those from a 5-seat version, including the centre-rear seatbelt, getting the conversion recognised by the DVLA (will probably require an inspection by VOSA) so that your registration document is altered officially to say 5 seats, and inform your insurance company of the change - who will instantly charge you more because you have a "modified" vehicle.

My advice is to find one with the 5-seat factory-fit option.

. you have FIVE 5 FIVE PEOPLE IN A FOUR 4 FOUR SEATER CAR/4X4. if the back three has not got seat belts its illegal. jesus it aint hard.
