I heard that as of Jan 2009 it is now legal, but it must be mounted in a position that it will not obstruct the driver's view. Otherwise, you can still be issued a citation.

Yes it is legal now. Last year the state senate in CA voted to pass a bill that legalized gps mounting on windshields. Before it was seen as an obstruction of view but now it is legal as of this year.

I bought a gadget ar Radio Shack that clips the GPS to a dashboard air vent and keeps it off the windshield or top of the dashboard; it cost about $20, and I've seen it at other stores. It works fine in my Saturn, with good reception.

I am in NY so I don't know California law. It could be an equipment violation. However, try placing it on your dash. Or, call your local PD & ask.

No, the only thing legal on your windshield is a rear view mirror. Anything else could be considered an obstruction and you could get a ticket if the officer wanted to give you one, or a reason to get pulled over.
