No. which is a shame considering how many middle lane hogging tossers there are out there.

You can only overtake on the left if the traffic in the outer lanes are stationary or if everyone is moving is "queues" and the outer lanes are slower.

The Highway Code gives all the details. It's a good book and everyone should read it at least annually to refresh their knowlege. The same section also condemns the Centre-Lane-Only-Drivers (CLODS). Pity it doesn't mention BMWs by name.

Yes it is legal provided that traffic is moving in queues and the Inside lane is moving faster and it is safe to do so.

Also, it is permissible to pass on the left when traffic in the right hand lane is turning right (will obviously apply to a dual carriageway but not a Motorway !!) and it is safe to do so.

Basically, if everyone stuck to the rules there would not be a problem - that is to drive in the left hand lane unless road markings say otherwise, and use the right hand lanes for overtaking or turning right only!

Yes but only if that lane is fully filtered from the other lane(s) (e.g if your lane is filtering off to turn left off the motorway, then you may over take on the inside of slower traffic on the main carriageway lanes)

Crazy Diamond
Only if your lane is moving faster but not over the speed limit.

No. But with so many drivewrs hoggin the middle and outside lanes on the roads these days it is the only option if you want to get anywhere, just do it safely though.

nickynoodles33
No but I think it should be as half the drivers on the motorway have not got the first friggin clue how to drive on it!!!!!

The original Peter G
On a motorway only if the traffic is slow moving and your lane is faster. On a dual carriageway you can if the slower car is indicating and preparing to make a right turn.

wonderingstar
no, but its acceptable if some butmunch is sitting in the middle lane doing 50 & the idiots in the outside lane are doing 150

The highway code gives you the definitive answer. But, I bet that you haven`t read it since you took your test...

Unfortunately in the UK it is highly illegal to "Undertake". I don't know why the law says this as all good drivers should use both mirrors all the time. In south africa for example if you approach a slow moving car in the outside lane it is legal to flash your head lights to ask him to move over to the inside lane. If he does not to this then it is legal to pass him on the inside.

CHRIS G
The only time you are legally allowed to 'undertake' is when there is a traffic build-up (jams) and the outside lanes moving slower than yours.

Otherwise NO - it's illegal to ovbertake on the inside !

ttlondon
No but keep the pedal to the metal and you'll be fine. It's an overtaking lane right?!! So if you happen to be overtaking everyone so fast there is not time to go back into the middle lane then...

WHO am i?
no its not but if you do it be quick.
