Is it ok to sit in the back of a car with an infant on your lap?
Find answers to your legal question.

Is it ok to sit in the back of a car with an infant on your lap?

Well I hope you all know the answer is NO!
So why do airlines encourage parents to travel with infants on their knees?
Total hypocrisy?

Airlines provide a separate seatbelt for the infant that attaches to the adult seatbelt. This means the infant is secured, but will not be squashed by the adult.
In a plane, the seatbelt is really there to keep you safely in the seat during acceleration, turning, braking and turbulence, or during an emergency landing. It probably wouldn't be a great deal of help in a head-on collision, but those are very rare in aircraft.

In a car, head-on (or nearly head-on) collisions are much more common, so that's what seatbelts are designed for. This is a much more violent action, hence the shoulder-belt, pre-tensioners, load-limiters, etc. in modern cars. To survive this sort of incident, an infant needs much better restraints than they need to survive the common aircraft incidents.

No it is not OK, they should be secured in an approved carseat or with an individual seatbelt and booster seat.

Airlines allow children up to the age of three (I believe) on parents laps, however, they are secured to the parent's seatbelt with a specially designed children's lap belt.

because unlike a car when you wreck in an airplane you die.

Firstly unless you want your child to act like a scud missile in the event of a crash,no like you said.
On an plane the gravity would work diffrently and hold the kid in your lap,but its probably so the airlines dont have to shell out for new child seats.so to sum up unless they invent aircraft with handbrakes we should be all right.

KELLY
no, and from the 18th of sep its law that any child under 135m must travel in booster seats or car seats , will this apply to airlines , buses , taxes etc???

the airlines will give you a seat for an infant if you ask the after all you are paying a fare the same as adults do

No you need a car seat... but if you use a baby seat in the airplane, they';; probably charge you for the seat... babies fly for free, that's why you can carry them on your lap...

arly barly
True. But The chance of the infant going through the windscreen of the plane are quite high aren't they??

Because if an Airplane got T-boned by another airplane it would not matter if you had a seatbelt on or not.

not so, if you do that in a car and you crash then you will send the infant flying but an airplane would not crash in the same sort of way so this would not happen.............................i think.

No!
Most state Laws I'm familiar with require a child restraint seat with certain age and weight restrictions.

basically becoz a plane is far safer than a car, and realistically if the plane was to crash...it's very doubtful that anyone would survive no matter where they sitting...

Yup, and to make more money on an adult seat...

Then buy a fecking seat for the child you tight wad, if you value its life that much.... but you and I both know... when the plane crashes into the side of a huge mountain... the seatbelt is not going to help you!

JOHN R
No is the answer and also anyone who sits any child on there laps well driving must be completely mad or just plane stupid just as people who don't have there children wearing seat belts they must be stupid

Difference a car on the road - likely to hit a car in front or get hit from behind, what happens?

In the air, it's just the plane

dodge man
the answer is no,,its against the law everywhere,,and as for the airlines,,i don't know what there rules are,,but on the ground it is a law,,they must be in a safety seat,,no matter where you go to,,and any state has the same law,,i hope this help,s,,good luck.

Not trying to upset you but isn't that a stupid question, try common sense,I worked for 35 yrs as paramedic and kids don't look to good after being flung through the windscreen and along the road ,Please Please don't let kids sit on your knee in the car.
BE SAFE AND THINK OF THE FUTURE COULD YOU FORGIVE YOURSELF IF ANYTHING BAD HAPPENED.as other ppl have said when a plane crashes its usualy doing 150 mls an hour minimum.

digital genius
airlines just want money. thats it,
bottom line.
all the time.
no other considerations.
