Is it only in the U.S or is it universal where people dont want to stop for ambulances?

Born and Raised in the USA. Lived in quite a few states in the USA. Never seen that happen. I have always seen people pull over.

I have driven Ambulances for 30 years. Most pull to the right, especially with new laws in Illinois and Missouri. I love it when someone doesn't and a Police Office happens to be behind us! Can you say TICKET!!!!!

I agree with Pumpkin. I've lived in the US my entire life and been driving for 3 years -- in NYC, LA, and San Fransisco -- and I've never seen any non-cooperation towards ambulances. They might not have the same power of instilling fear as a police car or a fire truck, but everyone pulls over nonetheless. The instances you must have seen were probably an infrequent minority.

This is one of those deals where we know what we're supposed to do, but we never get a chance to practice the procedures...Many times, it comes out of the blue, especially from the side or from the back...From the front, there may not be room to pull over, such as in multi-lane traffic...The point is that ANY emergency vehicle under flashing lights and siren has the right-of-way ALWAYS!..And we must yield to it - that means pulling over, clearing the intersection or whatever it takes to get out of its way and coming to a stop until it is passed...The best way to react to responding emergency vehicles is to make up our minds ahead of time so that if this happens, this is what I have do.

I flunked a license applicant on a road test for failing to pull over for an ambulance that he passed coming out of a side street and was coming up behind us.

Most people pull over for ambulances in the UK. They know it could be them one day.

Mostly by idiots with their zillion watt soundsystem being louder than anything in the 3 mile radius and those unfortunate drivers who happen to be in the area.

In Austria it is a law to give way to emergency vehicles using their emergency lights and sirens and most people comply. On the other hand I have experienced situations, where people driving do not know what to do in case an emergency vehicle appears behind them...... I am a voluntary firefighter in the countryside and we need to respond to accidents on a nearby highway. On the way to the highway we sometimes experience very interesting situations with some drivers - in all cases you can say, that drivers get under extreme stress when an emergency vehicle pulls up behind them and you have to be very aware and drive carefully.

Out of experience, the more dangerous part are the people passing an accident side. Either drivers slow down "to look" and sometimes cause another accident or they pass by without reducing the speed at all.

In the UK its the law to move out of the way for an ambulance, so most people do it

Yes it is the Law if you are on the same road as a ambulance with it's flashers going you should pull over or move out of the way. Same as a any emergency vechical.
Now, if you are on the other side(with a median) of the road you do not need to pull over or slow down unless the flashers are in the median.

I really don't know but I would assume that this happens all over, people just don't care or are too busy in their minds to pull over as required by law "Stupidity and the Lack of Understanding of the Rule of the Road".
