Ok, so I bought a 1970 impala that I absolutely love. The only problem is my mom is making me sell it because she says it's unsafe, and I'm only allowed to drive cars with airbags. I know it's a stretch, but is there any way to get airbags installed into the car?

No. The entire frame/unistructure is designed around the airbag system. As for your over protective mom she should be aware that SRS (airbags) is only a SUPPLEMENTAL system, so a really good set of shoulder/lap seat belts will keep you just as safe if you use them. Having a nylon bag blow up in your face will not prevent accidents, injuries or death. Millions and millions and millions of miles have been driven in cars that are not equipped with SRS and most people are still alive and well. |

Explain to mom the laws of physics and how a more massive vehicle will sustain a smaller delta-V in an accident than a lighter vehicle.

With the right amount of money, damn near anything is possible.
A 1970 Impala shouldn't even be classified as a car in comparison with the crap they build today. I would rather crash in a big old boat like a 1970 Impala any day than in one of these little sh**boxes they call cars now a days, just because it has air bags. |
