Is it safe for an almost 17 year old new driver to drive a Chevy suburban?
|
We have a daughter that will be 17 in Jan. We have been taking her out driving and preparing her for her driving test and the road so when school starts she can start transporting herself and her sister to and from school. However, we have a Chevy suburban that my husband wants her to drive instead of buying her a smaller more manageable car. He believes that since it is so big they will be safer. I have heard differentl, that it gives them a false sense of security. I am not sure what to think about any of this. Anyone had experience with any of this? Any information about this would be appreciated, thanks.

the Chevy suburban is a real safe vehicle ,but she may not have enough driving experience to handle this large of a vehicle, they are kind of hard to get used to ,but there one of the safest ones on the road today,i think though its lot of vehicle for a younger person to be driving, and it may turn out to be more than she can handle also,if it were me id buy her a smaller SUV if safety is a big concern ,and i know it is,this way she could get use to driving hero own vehicle,a smaller one would be ok for her,but a full size suburban may create problems for her, good luck on this one,he,s just wanting her to be safe, and i know how he feels, i have 2 daughters also, and was the same way. |

If it is a 4X4, I would definitely say "NO WAY" should you let her drive it. Young people have no concept of how easy it is to roll one of these, because they don't understand laws of physics.
Certainly she is safer from the standpoint of the size of the vehicle, but can she keep it on all four wheels? depends on her driving style when away from you.
Keep in mind also, that teens are notorious for letting friends drive their car, due to peer pressure. They will tell YOU that it isn't happening, but don't count on it. |

It's the same car I drove, and still drive, and I'm 21 with no accidents to date... Knock on wood. |

Just me........

It will be safer, If she is hit in it.
But, They do have a tendency of rollover.
Going to fast around curves or corners.
It depends on how much you trust her. |

I learned how to drive in my parents' Suburban 10 years ago and I hated every minute of it. I was scared of how big the thing was, and how incredibly long it took to stop. I didn't like going over bridges with people coming the other way - I was always afraid of getting too close to either side and either going into the water or hitting an oncoming car. I ended up buying a used Toyota Corolla for $5000. It was SLOW (awesome for a teenager I think), had good safety ratings and got great mileage, and lasted for well over 190,000 miles. A Suburban stops from 60mph in around 175 feet. A passenger car will stop anywhere from 107 to 143 depending on its size and braking capability. Imagine that extra 30+ feet of room in between your little girl and the car in front of her. Also remember that there's 8 seats for hysterically giggling teenagers...... a boyfriend and fold-flat seats...... I'd vote no. |

It's safe for her...but VERY bad for anyone unlucky enough to be in her path. As long as it is in GOOD condition and its tires have alot of tread, she should be able to manage it OK. My best friend drove a Suburban for his first car, and the only time he had trouble was when his worn out tires caused him to fish-tail on a wet road. Driving a huge, slow car has its advantages: it forces you to have to learn how to maneuver, keep your distance, and drive cautiously. This way, when she gets something smaller (and more fuel efficient) she'll have good technique and won't "cut corners". |

my wife has been in three accidents (none her fault) in our suburban and no one in the suburban was injured - I can't say that for the other cars involved |

all have to say is that for an inexperienced teen to drive a suburban is pretty risky because of the blindspots and the truck is so high shes not gonna be able to see the small cars next to her. |

Not a good idea, she doesn't have enough experience to handle something that large yet, get her something smaller until she has more road experience |

Do you know a good body shop? A Suburban is too big and I think that she will get little dents, scratches and so on because of the over all size. It wouldn't be because she isn't being careful, I just think that backing it up, parallel parking and parking lots in general will be difficult. However she will be much safer in it if something bad happens. |

that is so funny you asked when i was 17 i worked co op thru the school where i would go to work half the day well anyway that is what my boss had he worked rebuilding car parts and need me to run to get him something at the local parts store which was not even a mile away. I CAN'T BELIEVE I DIDN'T RECK IT. it was horrible to big for a new driver and it might be safer for her but she has to be able to drive it and a new driver in tight places with a suburban is a accident waiting to happen, and if she causes a accident there goes your insurance rates and what if the person or persons were badly injures or killed think about it all. as a parent i would get her a smaller car if you can afford to good luck and may your daughter be safe on the road |
