Is it safe to sleep in your car at an interstate highway rest stop at night?

Park in a well lighted area , and lock your doors. It is a lot safer than driving tired and sleepy. Apparently some of the respondents have lead a very sheltered life , watched to many horror movies or watch CNN on television. I have slept in rest stops many times and never had a problem.

most rest stops have the highway patrol going through there often. I have done this a couple times and my suggestion, just lock your doors, turn the car off so there are no problems with the fumes, and have a REALLY BIG KNIFE.

while it may not be safe in some places, I do it often. The highway patrol makes frequent stops at the rest areas.

I see lots of people doing it, especially truckers on the 17 and the 40, but I will tell you that I would worry about you because I once had a friend (male) who did it someplace in Texas and he got killed by robbers. Even though it was many years ago, I have never forgotten that, so go pictch your tent and be safer.

In some of the newer more modern rest area's that are patrolled yes the old ones no.

I wouldn't think it'll be safe. You could be robbed, car jacked, killed, etc. I would rather stay in a motel.

Otherwise try a hostel....

No. It's very dangerous. You are a target for anyone that is trying to hurt you, rob you, steal your car, or just kill you for no reason. A better idea would be to pull into a hotel parking lot and sleep. The hotel will kick you out if they catch you but it's much safer. I dont even stop at those rest stops to use the bathrooms anymore. It's loaded with panhandlers and beggers. Who knows if they have weapons or if someone is waiting to ambush me in a bathroom stall. No thanks.

Depends how busy it is. I prefer the truck stops where you can also get a shower for a few bucks.

It's really dangerous because you never know what kind of low life are there.

We used to drive all night, and rest during the day when its allot safer.

of people breaking in or
whatever, but your car gives
off gasses and when you sleep
in it its bad for you.

holy crap you guys are paranoid. I just finished reading the journal of a middle ages woman who, while on a bike tour, spend most of her nights in texas at state rest areas, and never ran into anyone threatening. I'm from the midwest, but I've stopped at a dozen rest stops while driving that I'd feel comfortable sleeping at. Stop seeing the world through hear-say and secondhand fears and actually take a look at what is really out there!
