Is it safe to sleep in your car when you are on a road trip?

If yes, what are your suggestions? Like where etc.

I don't even stop at rest areas during the day, let alone at night. I'd never dream of trying to sleep in my car at one. Personally, I think it's worth spending a few bucks and getting a motel room myself.

I would choose a well lit and well known rest stop. I would never sleep on the side of the road.

As long as your not driving while you sleep :-)

And I would avoid sleeping at rest area's, ESPECIALLY at night time!

Never sleep over at a rest stop unless there are lots of vechiles there. If you must sleep in your car go to a super walmart, not only do they have cameras, they will not have you towed.Have done it myself. If you are in the country side a state park usually charges less than 10.00 for a day fee and you may sleep anywhere there is no reserved space have done that also.

If you are looking for a place to sleep in your vehicle, you have to be aware of the area. As another poster has said, Wal*Mart will allow you to sleep in their lots (park away from the store towards the edge of the lot). Another good choice is a truck stop.

Stay away from quiet rest areas. You want someplace where it is well lit, and where there is some activity. Some states also have time limits on the rest areas, and do not allow overnight parking!

Do not leave the car running while you sleep. There is always a chance of CO2 poisoning, and a running car will call attention to the fact that the car is occupied!

If you can find a campground, it may be worth it to pay the $10 -$20 to camp, even if you are sleeping in your car! Campgrounds are safer, and they usually have bathhouses where you can shower and change clothing!

Unless you have a large vehicle, you are not going to get as good a night's rest in the car, just because the seats, even if reclining, are not nearly as comfortable as a bed!

Don't do this often but my place of choice is a very well lit, almost blinding, convenience store parking lot. Off to the side away from the store's entrance but close enough that no weirdo gets any ideas. I always ask the clerk if it's okay and have never been refused yet.

Yes If you stop at big rest area's and carry smith and Wesson with you just in case you need the protection.

It depends on the road condition, the driver. But i would recommend not to sleep just in case of an accident. because u never know when trouble comes.

At rest areas, beats the heck out of $65 for a 4 hr nap !

Sure but I agree with the answer above and don't sleep at a rest stop.

An extra blanket and pillow could be a great asset if you should have to sleep in the car. And don't forget to take a jacket or sweater. Even the hottest days can get chilly at night, especially in the mountains.
