Is it safe to take my new car for a long trip?

Is it safe to take my new car for a long trip?

I just got my car yesterday, a brand new 08 Civic, I was wondering if it is safe to immediately take it on a long road trip with my friends. The trip, one way, would span around 110-120 km mostly through flat highway, but will pass through hills and small mountains.

Is there any protocol that must be observed for new cars before being able to drive it without worries?

Well, I do believe it is safe. Since it is a new car then you can expect that it will have all of the features in place already because it is new. One thing you don't have to worry about so much is the wear and tear that comes from having a vehicle for many years. Having a new car is helpful because the parts are new. Now I will say this. Its not such a good idea to put a lot of milage on a new car right away. It is safe to drive it as I said but putting a lot of milage on it so quickly reduces the value faster. Overall I think you should be fine.

Most cars these days do not require a "break in" period so you should be just fine - enjoy your trip.

To be sure, look at the owners manual and see if they recommend driving at a certain speed for the first few hundred miles. When I purchased my truck in 2002 the manufacturer recommended driving no more than 60 mph for the first 500 miles.

just don't GUN the gas or RED LINE it or RACE it ... drive/shift it between 3000~3500rpm

it should be just fine...it's a brand new car

When I got my new prius I took a trip immediately to mexico a 3000 mile journey. Nothing says warranty like a big trip...Here are some additional supplies you might want to take with you

Here is a list of essentials to take

1. Take Toilet Paper, Soap and Water
2. A tent
3. Some undergarments, shorts, pants, t-shirts
4. Your computer and a (data card you can get one from the evdo experts http://tinyurl.com/sxdd7 for free when you sign up for service or rent it from them without any contract.)
5. Granola Bars
6. Fix it Flat in a can

Just try to vary the speed, don't use the cruise control. should be just fine

Sure, why not? It's a great way to get to know your new car. I'm picking up my new car later this week and have already planned a much longer trip than yours lasting three days.

If it's a brand new car take care not to overstress things too much. New tyres and brakes will take a little while to scrub in, so don't be tempted to get too enthusiastic straight away. Most modern cars do not have running-in restrictions like older cars used to, but it would be sensible not to over-rev the engine straight away.

As someone else has already said, make sure you take the handbook with you so that you know what everything does and how to make it do what you want it to. Make sure you're familiar with the basic controls like the lights and heat/vent before you set off, but all the other stuff that you probably won't use right away can wait until later.

Plan yourself a nice route, take plenty of time and have a great trip!! :o)

I would have to say yes. As long as you check everything before you take off, air in tires, radiator fluid, oil, transmission fluid (if needed), brake fluid, power steering, etc... It would be alot safer than taking some old beater car that's falling apart that's for sure.

You should be fine. The advice about checking the manual about any suggestions is a good one though, just in case. Congrats on the new car by the way... I am still driving my 1990 Accord... 243000 miles (about 389000km !) and it's starting to make some strange sounds... but it's still going!
Also, that really isn't all that long a trip... when we bought my wife's truck we had a 170 mile drive home from the dealership... and it's still going with over 100,000 miles on it.
Just drive sanely and I imagine you will be just fine... just be careful you don't get carried away since you will be with your friends.

Yes you can take it on any type of trip just take it easy on the heavy acceleration and drive a little slower for the first 500 miles.
