So many people on the road these days don't indicate and it drives me crazy, its not like it takes any effort! But is it illegal not to indicate?

It drives me crazy too but I believe Mercs, BMWs and 4x4 vehicles are no longer fitted with indicators. |

Not only illegal, but impolite and rude - not what our moms told us to be. When we are on the road, we are in a relationship with every other vehicle around us and we have to get along. The secret to any successful relationship is communication. If we don't 'talk' with each other about what we want to do or where we want to go, then we get into trouble. The way we communicate vehicle to vehicle is with blinking lights or with an arm signal. So, if I don't know what you want to do and you do it and our vehicles collide, our day is ruined, not to mention a few other things. Gotta be considerate out there.

Hello
The highway code book used to say that you had to legally Indicate your intentions to other road users. This is so they know where you are going and. If no one is around then you don't have to but it is good practise to do so. And yes you can be prosecuted for failing to indicate.

According to Response Insurance, a national car insurer, 42% of those drivers say they don’t have enough time, 23% admit they are just plain “lazy,” 17% don’t signal because when they do, they forget to turn it off, 12% admit they are changing lanes too frequently to bother, 11% say it is not important, 8% say they don’t signal because other drivers don’t, and perhaps most disturbing 7% say forgoing the signal “adds excitement to driving.”
The Company identified several driver-types when it comes to ignoring turn signals – Impulsive, Lazy, Forgetful, Swervers, Ostriches, Followers, and the Dare Devils.

It is illegal not to use your turn signal when required (turning, changing lanes, pulling out). I normally do not cite for it, I tend to use it as probable cause to pull a vehicle over, after all probable cause is better than reasonable suspicion. |

Always signal at junctions and roundabouts.
Always signal when pulling away from behind an obstruction such as another parked car.
Always signal when overtaking.
Otherwise, signal when to do so will help another road user (including pedestrians). Keeping to this rule forces you to be observant and look carefully in order to make the right decision. |

To a modern driver indicators are optional.
Never signal BEFORE a manoeuvre, SOMETIMES during , but ALWAYS after, as someone will be asking what the ****** hell that ******* **** is up to. |

no its NOT illegal.
If a police car is behind you while you are turning left/right out of a T junction they will not stop you or question you. (not that means a lot)
It is illegal not to have brake lights, but not signals.
Many old motorbikes have not signals, push bikes have none and they are road users.
However if you cause an accident because you didnt signal, you could be done for reckless driving.
