Is it time to start banning talking on cell phones and driving at the same time? Why or why not?

They have already started here in Oregon and Wash. It's called the distracted driver laws. It goes beyond cell phones to putting on makeup, and even eating and changing radio stations.

Yes, Yes, Yes! I have a friend who always is on her phone while driving and has had one wreck because of it. Recently she asked to take my kids for the day. I said we were busy because I was worried about this. I always have a rule that I don't use my phone while driving with other people's kids in the car. I expect everyone else to show me the same courtesy. Beyond this I really limit my usage and don't just call friends up to see how their day is going.

No, I agree that some do not drive safely with cell phones but I see people reading, combing their hair & putting on makeup. People drive 30 MPH or more over the speed limit, the auto manufactures could save money leaving turn signals off of cars because they are never used. I think that is far worse the cell phones.

If we first enforced the traffic laws in place we would improve safety so much cell phones wouldn't be an issue.

Here in UK we are already banned by law but the people who do it still continue, I have done it but if at all possible I pull up to answer. people also have been stopped for drinking (non alcahol) or in one case eating candy. to my mind this is a step too far, reading and phones take your attention away no doubt but eating a sandwich??? and yes enforce the existing laws more firmly increase penalties get *** holes off the road.

Yes and no. There should be age restrictions but not completely outlawed. I use mine while driving all the time and there is more risk driving too fast than talking on a phone.

In my opinion - yes!

Studies have found that driving while talking on a phone (without a hands-free device) is worse than driving while intoxicated.

I can't tell you all how many times I've nearly been in accidents because other drivers made stupid mistakes, and the common denominator was they all had a phone pressed to their head.

I think that it's time to follow the NY model and mandate headsets for cell phones in vehicles. I spend way too much time picking up the pieces after some moron looks down to dial and plows into a semi.

This is a tough question. Some drivers can drive safely while talking on the phone, changing the radio station and refereeing kids. (Extreme hypothetical example of course) Other dirvers could have their hands on the 10 and 2 position, have the radio off, driving the exact speed limit and still be a hazard on the roadway. The question is do we want to create laws that punish drivers with common sense because of the mistakes of the oblivious? In the end we are all human and have a bad day. Some people just have more "dumb" luck than others. That is why there is variable driver insurance rates.
