American car companies did it before then, like in the 50s. It was a big deal for a while despite they only supposedly used "donated" bodies. But lots of workers were traumatized by the whole experience and so came the advent of crash test dummies. |

When car crashes started to be noticed more in the 50's many companies decided to test their vehicles and the only way to see the effects on the human body was to use a human body.
Bodies were usually convicted criminals who had been executed but the trauma of seeing a real person smashed up in a car accident forced the companies to come up with crash test dummies. |

In the olden days I always got the impression that TVR built a car, put it on sale, and then found out how it handled. Usually when one of their customers wrote to the factory complaining about how dead he was. |

It is true that dead bodies were used for crash testing. They were people who had left their bodies for medical science, it was at the time the only way to simulate what happens in a road accident, until the birth of the "crash dummies" |

I think quite a few test centres used dead bodies, but it was not very useful as they were too stiff and did not react correctly , can't be any more odd than the artist that does "Plastination" on dead bodies and calls it art |

Sounds like an Urban Legend...and could be a right smelly one, too. Did they dig them up? Where do you go to just purchase cadavers? "I think I'll will my body to science...the science of crash testing..." Hah! Good one...K ;o) |

I hears that it was American companies. Didn't they disintegrate with the impact so they had to come up with crash test dummies? |
