I have not heard this but my husband said it today as a friend just passed

If you are in UK you don't have to have them on. In theory, if you do use them, other drivers should be a bit more considerate around you.

As someone that is currently using them, I can tell you that people just use them as an excuse to drive like an absolute idiot around you. Even if you are driving above the speed limit, they will over take, drive up your ****, try to undertake you. Drive into a space that you are clearly trying to reverse into!

Generally they have the effect of making other derivers completely abuse the system and do things they wouldn't even contemplate if they thought they had an experienced driver in front of them.

I would actually lay money on the fact that more accidents are caused by people putting Green L plates (or P plates) on their cars.

Why have I got mine on? I don't know, I think I will take them off tomorrow.

No, its up to the person if they want to display the P plates.

it is just to make the public aware that you are new on the road. e.g not to park to close to you on a hill whilst on a red light. You dont have to use them but i did for two weeks until i built up confidence.

In England you dont have to use one but it just helps to warn other people that you have just passed and might need a bit more time

Depends on where you are from - in the UK is definately not compulsory, infact it's more of a courtesy to other road users.

ALTHOUGH - most people (including myself) don't put the P on when you pass as it's a comon feeling that it just gives experience drivers an excuse to 'bully' you.

has he gone yet?
I believe it is up to the individual I may be wrong

Nah, don't think so- not in the UK. You can if you want, an option if you're nervous. I've been out with a good few of my mates just after they've passed and none have had green plates.

the P is voluntary at the moment but It may become mandatory in the UK, but here (Isle of Man) it is a red R and it is mandatory for the first year after passing the test.

Yes, then the next step is to have your brown faeces displayed when you missjudge a corner and crash into a wall.

There is no P here in America....

We just drive....

I just discussed this with an English contact the other day....

I don't think the green L, is compulsory but it is a good thing to have so people give you a bit of slack.

yes also in the uk now . The new drivers act affects drivers that passed their driving test on or after 1st June 1997. where all new drivers must display p-plates for the first six month of passing their test.

star_girl

Yeah, you must keep the green P for one year.
