Probably not from the phone itself. I suppose anything's possible with an electronic device, but extremely unlikely.
I think most of the signs that say do not use a cell phone while filling a vehicle are more from the safety standpoint that the attention of person filling the vehicle should be on the dispensing of a class 1 fuel at not a phone call! |

Already busted by Mythbusters LONG time ago.
DarwinAwards.com traced the original report from somewhere in Southeast Asia, but even they couldn't find the actual incident. However, warnings stickers did go up. |

Mythbusters episode 2 tried to create the conditions to prove this story and were not successful. Series 2 verdict- ? this theory is busted.

not according to the show mythbusters. they set up a life size model and tried many different experiments and could not get it to cause a fire or explosiion |

i think so. but i can explain it exactly. i just heard somebody say the cellphone can radiate some kind of wave or something can arise the machine.s reaction so some fire star may spring out to fire the oil. |

The local news station in my area showed how a spark from a cell phone actually did contribute to a fire. I don't know all the details. Just saw the pics they had on tv showing it on fire.
They were warning about it 6 mo ago. |

Mobile phones run on electricity, and therefore potentially have the capability of causing sparks. Petrol (gas) vapour is inflammable and prone to burn explosively. If there was a serious leak from an underground tank onto the forecourt on a windless day and no one noticed this and it wasn't shut off the public, and then a mobile caused a spark:
There would be a boom and a half. Any car that was filling up at the time would probably have the fuel tank go up too.
You ought to be giving the handling of this dangerous, inflammable liquid your full attention anyway, though. Far more pressing is idiots smoking cigerettes at petrol stations. |
