Look - I don't blame you for asking the question, because that's what you've been told. But if I had a pound for every time that question was asked in here, I'd be a very rich man!
Let me put your mind at rest.
There is currently no possibility whatsoever that the minimum driving age will be raised to 18 - none at all. Zero chance - forget it!
This rumour has been around for at least 20 years and it completely refuses to go away.
Currently, the Driving Standards Agency are undertaking a public consultation to improve learning standards to try to cut down the terrible death toll on new drivers. But raising the driving age is NOT one of the recommendations. I promise you this will not happen. The petition mentioned by one of the other contributers is a complete waste of time and energy.
If, however, they were to raise it at some point in the future. First it would require an act of Parliament (several years), then the act would have to be enacted - several more years. Then the government would advertise well in advance of the actual change.
My daughter is nine years old - I think she is the first year who might, repeat 'might', have to face the possibility of driving at 18. Anyone older than that is quite safe. |

There are proposals which are not yet law that you will still be able to get a provisional licence at 17 but the new training system will take at least 12 months to complete the course you will therefore not be able to get a full licence until you are 18. These are only proposals at the moment and no implementation date has been given. |
