if the engine is running, then yes, you are wasting gas.
If you just have the ignition ON and the engine is NOT running then you are not using gas but hurting the ignition system! |

depends how long you idle for |

Actually you waste more fuel letting the car idle then starting it. With the fuel injection in cars while the lines are pressurized and not burned fuel is returned to your fuel tank. Not only does idling waste more fuel it isn't real good for your car and in some states if you walk away for an idling vehicle you can get a ticket. |

In older days, cars with carbuerators used a fair amount of fuel when starting the motor. The amount varied from vehicle to vehicle, but a good rule of thumb was that the motor used the same amount of fuel to start as it did to idle for about 30-45 seconds. With the advent of fuel injection, startup required a great deal less fuel. They do not use fuel to pressurize the fuel lines (they maintain pressure long after the engine has stopped). If you are going to be sitting for more than fifteen seconds or so, it is more frugal to turn the car off, and then restart it. |

Yes in some models mostly larger vehicles.
It takes more feul to charge through the lines in a feul ingector vihicle when first cranking instead of idoling in park.
But depends on how long your car will sit running. |

I've seen reports that its better to cut motor off if its going to idle over 5 min. Can't provide a link |

running it for 10 seconds uses more gas than starting it (on a relatively modern car) |

yes, when you start your car the fuel pump surges fuel into the combustion chamber to help start it, gennerally it will rev a little higher than what youre idle speed is |
