i am 17 in october and i am really excited to drive and cannot wait. i heard rumours of the driving age moving up to 18, does anyone know if this is true and if it is , when will this come in to effect?

No the driving age has not changed. There were many rumors and many law makers that have tried to change the laws and increase the age to 18 but so far it is still in effect that when you turn 15 you can begin the process of obtaining your learner's license. It also does depend on your state how soon you can drive, but based on your age, you can drive as long as you have your learners.

it is just rumours, there have been numerous campaigns and government consultations on the subject but nothing has ever come of it. |

Studies are finding it should be raised to 18. On the other hand you needn't worry. Even it was raised tomorrow it wouldn't effect you, they'd still "grandfather" in people at your age. |

There was a time, back in the 1950's when the age was 18, and then it was lowered to 17, and then 16 in some states. Now, the numbers show that it once again may have to be raised to 18. But, this is something that will take years to put in place.
But, the insurance for a 16 and 17 year old drivers could get so "out of sight" that the average family will not be able to afford it, and that will keep more kids off the road. |

I wish it were true and it should 21 not 18. But when you do get on the road take care and enjoy but think of other road users. |
