Is there a law against tailgating?

Are you a victim of tailgating? If so, how often? does it irritate you?

In most states tailgating is a minor traffic violation punishable by a small fine. I know its annoying, just try not to lose your temper with whoever is tailgating you. Tailgaters can be aggressive, and messing around with them may get you hurt. Try to tap your breaks very lightly so your break lights flash and get their attention. A lot of drivers are easily distracted and don't realize they're tailgating you.

where there is no actual tailgating law its called reckless driving...happens to me a lot..i drive slow and im on a lot of 2 lane 55 mph roads...i pull over often and let them go by

It is illegal in the fact that the driver of the second car is failing to maintain proper distance (2 seconds apart).

No I don't and the people who do it to me see my bumper real fast. I don't invade other people's space don't invade mine. Most state there is a tailgating law I live in TN so I know there is one here. However the pistol I carry in my car and the bumper sticker I have that says" If you ride my tail I am not liable for shooting yours" Should give people a hint.

It is illegal. I am a victim. Daily. It irritates me.

Yes, it is possible for a person to be a victim of tailgating. Tailgating is harassment plain and simple, it is no different than someone walking up to you with threats of physical violence if you don't do what they tell you to do.
I've been rear ended by tailgaters twice. Both times I sued and won no contest thanks to witnesses. Both times I got a new car out of it and a hefty $$$$$ bank roll. The first time I was hit by a Cadillac Eldorado the second time was by a BMW Z4 M.

Its called following to close if someone is to close speed up or pullover its all so illegal to impede traffic

Yes, in most places there is a law or 2. Yes, at least once a trip, even to the damned store. Yes, I would love to choke them to death, they are responsible for too many accidents.

And for the tailgaters out there... There are some of us that are fed up, that are gonna break at any point because of this. Nearly 30% of drivers have a weapon in their car... I have a 6 cell Mag-lite (Illegal, by the way, to carry by the seat)... I will use it...

Yeah, once in a while and that's when I put my flashing lights on. Tell's them I know they're too close and they'll either back off or change lanes.

rudyj06
it is illegal and some times inforced. 85 dollar fine.

Yes, I have been a victim of tailgating, but also I admit, I once was pulled over FOR TAILGATING. The person in front of me saw a cop and slammed on his brakes and I didn't have enough time to slow down and the cop pulled me over for tailgating and gave me a warning. But I didn't do it intentionally, But for those who do tailgate, intentionally, ignore them, for you should worry about whats in front of you and not what is behind you, you are responsible for anything in front of you and if you're too busy worrying about your rear end you may end up crashing into someone elses rear end.

My cure for tailgating is to slam on the brakes. Unless it is tailgating before a football game

Mr. Anthropic
How could someone be a VICTIM of tailgating? There are laws against crashing into ppl and failing to maintain safe distance and reckless endangerment but that's up to the cop. You are never a VICTIM of tailgating, You may be a victim in a horrendous crash that resulted from the car behind you traveling too closely only when contact occurs and your cars spins into a ditch, but since there is no contact there is no way to be a VICTIM of tailgating. That's like being a VICTIM of sadness because its kinda rainy but you want sunshine.
