Is there a law regarding the tyres on a 4 wheel drive?

I have recenty enquired about some new tyres and was told that all 4 tyres have to be identical is this true or just best practice or will 2 seperate pairs do ?

You would want all 4 tires to be the same. they should be the same size and tread pattern. you can get away with mix matched tires but especially on a 4WD vehicle you should definitely use all the same exact tires. The Problem with mix matching them is that the different tread patterns will wear differently and provide more instability of the vehicle. Don't get me wrong you can do it, but its best to stay with all 4 identical. 2 seperate pairs would probably work is you put the same 2 in the front and the other matching pair in the back but try to match all 4. Also, there is no law regarding all the same tires. |

The only law that I can think of doesn't really have to do with what kind of tires you use, and that's snow chains are illegal here in Michigan, USA.
But to prevent damage to your transmission, rear differential, and transfer case, it is best to have all matching tires. If you must have different tires, make sure they have the same outer diameter. You can run two seperate pairs (one pair per axle) but it will effect handling when you engage the four-wheel-drive, and may wear out or break parts due to a mis-size in tire diameter. |

They should all be the same diameter, or it will screw up one of your differentials. If your car is fulltime AWD, it would be really bad, especially if the differentials are limited slip.
The law has nothing to do with it, and I doubt there is one unless stupid people caused one. A fulltime AWD car with different diameter tires would be extremely dangerous to drive. |

no law, common sense.
Odd tires on a 4wd is a bad idea.
IF You ever engage 4wd and hit on a dry ground or pavement or roadway, you WILL break axles and parts. different tire sizes require different speeds, and will snap things. keep the tires the same. |

In the UK where I presume you are as you spell tyre with a
" Y " The law states that the tyre must have a minimum 1.6 mm tread depth in a continuous band across three quarters of the tread width with a visible tread pattern across the remaining quarter. The tyre must have an E mark and be suitable for the use to which it is being put.
Besides what the law says, on a 4 x 4 you should always change tyres as an axle pair with the same size and make of tyre. If you put a new and part worn tyre on the same axle you get a condition known as diff wind up, which can break your axles. |

Are you talking 4wd cars or 4x4's?
There is no law but the recommendation is that you change all four if they are 3mm or less, otherwise change them in matched pairs putting the new ones to the rear.
Always stay with the manufacturer's spec's. It may seem to cost more at first, but you will be saving yourself a lot of trouble |

NO LAW JUST HAVE ALL OF THEM THE SAME SIZE. |

2 separate pairs is fine in fact 4 individuals (same size of course!) is acceptable. It's impractical to expect any vehicle to run on the same tyres, punctures and availability completely negate the possibility.
4 the same would be ideal, 2 per axle (which I always strived for) is as good. but anything with a legal tread is acceptable. |
