Hey

There's a decent tip on this web site about remembering braking distances as well as overall stopping distances. Definately worth a glance.

Here's something I lifted from the web site (referenced below)

20 Mph X 2 = 40 Feet

30 Mph X 2.5 = 75 Feet

40 Mph X 3 = 120 Feet

50 Mph X 3.5 = 175 Feet

60 Mph X 4 = 240 Feet

70 Mph X 4.5 = 315 Feet

Just Remember 2 / 2.5 / 3 / 3.5 / 4 / 4.5

If from the vehicle in front use the 2 second rule. Select a fixed point and ensure you pass it at least 2 seconds after the vehicle in front. Increase when wet etc. 'Only a fool breaks the two second rule.'

In metres the only way I remember is by knowing that the overall stopping distance and speed at 50mph is roughly the same 50mph = 53metres

Anything below that speed, the distance is less than the speed: 30mph=23metres

Anything above 50mph the distance is greater than the speed: 60mph=73metres

To learn the Thinking distance is REALLY easy, just times the speed by 3 and knock a zero off the end!

20mph = 6 metres (20 x 3 = 60 take 0 off = 6)
40mph = 12 metres
70mph = 21 metres

To then work out the Braking distance, you have to use a bit of maths!

work out the overall distance, and then work out the thinking distance and take that off the overall distance.

50mph = 53 metres overall
50mph = (5x3) 15 metres thinking

therefore braking distance is 53 - 15 = 38 metres

hope that helps and hasn't confused you further!!

@20mph:- 20 + (20 x 2) divided by 2 = 20 + 20 = 40feet

@30mph:- 30 + (30 x 3) divided by 2 = 30 + 45 = 75feet

@40mph:- 40 + (40 x 4) divided by 2 = 40 + 80 = 120feet

@50mph:- 50 + (50 x 5) divided by 2 = 50 + 125 = 175feet

@60mph:- 60 + (60 x 6) divided by 2 = 60 + 180 = 240feet

@70mph:- 70 + (70 x 7) divided by 2 = 70 + 245 = 315feet

In wet..... times 2
On ice... times 10

For metres, divide all answers again by 3 and that will give you a good enough idea... ie. pick the answer closest to the one you were working out in your multiple choice selection.

Can I suggest that you go for refresher driving course (theory)?

The vehicle condition, the road condition, the driver diligence, are among the main factors for the stopping distances

Some vehicles have shorter stopping distances (dry/wet) than others

Some road surface (dry/wet) help you stop within much shorter distance

Some drivers can stop a car much faster than others (dry/wet)

IF you can not remember then stop driving you are not mature enough to be behind the wheel.

i don't understand the question really. are you talking about like where you're supposed to stop at a light or a stop sign? you stop before the white line. if you're talking about how long it takes to stop, that's just something you have to figure out with practice.

or if you're talking about how far away you're supposed to be from the car in front of you... you're supposed to watch the car in front of you, and when it passes a road sign or a telephone pole, or basically anything, you should be 3 seconds behind it. meaning as soon as the car in front of you passes something, you shouldn't pass it for 3 seconds.

hope it helps =/
