Find answers to your legal question.

Is there any law about driving with the boot open (when moving furniture for example)?

I need to pick up some bulky furntiure, and won't be able to close the boot so will have to tie it down (and some bits will be protruding). Is this actually legal? Any adivce on safest way to tie down boot and secure furniture?

So long as the load is secure and none of your lights or registration plate are obscured then there's no laws against it so far as I know. Check the Highway code, section 98, i've put a link to it below.

However if you have an overhang, ie 4ft of timber sticking out the back then you'd be in bother.

I'd use rope or bungee cords to tie the bootlid down onto the towing eye and use an old duvet to protect the items and the car.

hope this helps.

You have to make sure it's very secure.

Cover your back - tie it down securely and attach a red or yellow rag or the like.

The cops could do you in theory but it is unlikely if the load is secure!

Best way to tie it down is to use nylon ratchet ties - about £2 from a DIY store and go thru the boot catch and down under the car to the towing loop. OR over the boot hatch (tie around wiper arm and under the car to towing loop/hook

I am not sure how legal but I have needed to do this and have managed to tie boot down and made sure that number plate is showing.on my car I was able to put twine though the boot fastener and under bumper . Once when I was unable to tie I just drove very slow and boot stayed in place anyway. could you actually tie it to furniture ? I only had a short distance to go . If this is difficult look in your local paper I did that with some furniture that needed moving and only paid £20 for a "man with a van" good luck

just tie it down good and if it sticks out past the back , slap something bright on it so no one hits it pulling up to you.

No dramas legally. Put the furniture in the boot and tie the boot latch down to the boot catch. Place towels over the parts of the furniture that you don't want scratched. If you have any part protruding 600 millimetres or 2 feet then tie a red rag to them to alert drivers behind about the protrusion.

Happy moving!
